OCTOBER ISSUE

 NEWSLETTER

President's Message
Bryan Bell

Hello fellow ISES members,
I hope you all had a wonderful summer and are having an incredible fall, both in business and in your personal lives!

I am pleased to announce that our new programming year started off with a bang! For those of you who missed out, David Deloach, the General Manager of Entertainment at Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom in Orlando (and ISES International President Elect) joined the Toronto chapter to discuss some lessons in leadership culled from his years of experience in the event industry. This wonderful evening hosted by the Berkeley Church was well attended with over 80 guests including many new members.

October will feature a great meeting at the Drake Hotel where Donna Messer from ConnectUs Communications will be presenting on the 'Art of Effective Negotiation' on Oct. 16th. The evening will also feature a customized 5 course tasting menu created by the Drake's chef. Space is limited for this event to 55 attendees so be sure to register now at www.isestoronto.com/mregister.htm

November 6th brings us the annual ISES Toronto Gala. Last year featured record attendance, and aside from the incredible turnout, the buzz and energy throughout the night was memorable. We're confident that this years 'Swing out in Style', hosted by the Palais Royale, will be even better! If you have not seen this venue since it's multi million dollar renovation, then you will be blown away. Situated right on the shore of Lake Ontario it is the perfect setting for this wonderful affair. The food will be fantastic and the line up for the evening will feature a wonderful Swing - Jazz theme.

This fantastic event will be headlined by Kira Callahan's Lil' Savoy Swing Band and the Anthony Terpstra Seventet band (sponsored by JGardner Entertainment and Event management Inc.), followed by the Sands Trio. The evening will be emceed by new member Alan Smithson of Star Productions. You will each receive a formal invitation with the full evening program in the near future. Don't forget to participate by donating to the silent auction which is always one of the highlights of the evening!

In our efforts to enhance your ISES experience, the formation of a CSEP study group continues as one of our initiatives for this year, and we have just introduced the ISE pack which offers a discount to those members who would like to sign up in advance for an annual meetings package. The chapter board continues to work on initiatives to bring added value to your membership and I can't over-emphasize that the biggest value is derived by joining a committee and becoming involved!

I look forward to connecting with you at the October meeting and the Gala, and if you have any thoughts as to how we can continue to strengthen the ISES Toronto experience, please let me know as I would love to hear them.

All the best,
Bryan Bell
President, ISES Toronto Chapter

ISES Meeting Recap - Making Magical Memories: Lessons in Leadership

A BIG Thank You to all the members and guests who attended our chapter meeting on September 18, despite the last minute venue change! The Church on Berkeley proved to be a beautiful choice, remarkably unique for both its décor (most memorably the disco ball spinning against the backdrop of a gorgeous old stone wall) and quirky facts, such as the old altar being used as the bar. We enjoyed a sumptuous dinner catered by Ginger Island while experiencing the inspiring speech from David DeLoach, whose engaging contribution to the evening added enormously to its success!

Making Magical Memories: 'Lessons in Leadership' was the 'speech theme'. David DeLoach shared the 11 leadership lessons he's learned over the years. These lessons were reviewed and explained in detail with examples of how David has applied them to the teams he has led working as the leader of the Special Event Operation Team for the Magic Kingdom Park at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort in Orlando, Florida. David discussed some of the experiences that have taught him some very valuable lessons in leadership that can be applied to Special Event Management, ISES Chapters, and business in general. The speech turned out as promised to be a valuable session that will generate ideas for us all to use in our own business to improve service and productivity!

'The 11 Lessons in Leadership':
1. Design your organization structures for success.
2. Put the right people in the right roles.
3. Ensure team-cast members are knowledgeable in their roles.
4. Make dramatic leaps in customer-guest service.
5. Implement effective structured processes for getting work done.
6. Explore, probe and know what's going on in your organization and act upon your findings.
7. Actively, observe and react to the performance of your direct reports.
8. Expand and act upon knowledge and experience of the best service anywhere.
9. Partner effectively and successfully with staff and cross-functional partners.
10. Demonstrate a passionate and professional commitment to your job.
11. Demonstrate a mastery of business fundamentals.

Other notable highlights from his speech include the following; His approach, as he stated, was not entirely unique to other business plans, except in his company's willingness to actually engage the techniques he laid out. He emphasized the need to 'break the mold' when designing the structures of your organization, and treating any feedback you may get as a gift, a tool you can use to improve with, no matter what form that feedback may come in. He also discussed the importance of not 'just filling the position', but of finding the right person to take on that role. When it comes to meeting expectations of clients/customers, he told us to not just meet those expectations but to ask the question, 'How do we improve your expectations?' saying 'nothing is ever perfect, so keep improving'. Another interesting observation he made was the need to 'build relationships before you need them'. Assure you have built solid relationships with partners before you're in a crisis and in need of their help.

With respect to customer service, he spoke of projecting 'a positive image and energy at all times', smiling at all times, as one of the most important points to remember!

Mr. David DeLoach currently serves on the ISES International Board as ISES President-elect 2007/2008 and has volunteered his time as a two term past President of the ISES Orlando chapter, a member of the ISES Ethics Committee, a chair of the ISES MARCOM Committee and a member of the Board of Governors.

Walt Disney once said, "You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality." Mr. DeLoach shared with us how that same philosophy holds true today as the leadership at Disney strives to ensure the "Disney experience" for each and every guest.

October Meeting Update

The Art of Effective Negotiating

Tuesday October 16, 2007 5:30pm - 9:00pm

1150 Queen Street West

We already have a network; the problem is many of us don't know how to "tap" into it, to use our network wisely.

The single most important networking skill to develop is lateral thinking. We must be open-minded and see "connections" between everyone in our network.

Far too many people fail to make the right connection because of narrow thinking.

What you will learn?

  • Ten rules for effective communication - How to use but not abuse your contacts
  • The Link and Think™ theory - How to become aware of your missing links
  • How to use lateral thinking - Learn to think outside the box
  • How to make that first minute count - What to say and how to say it
  • How to listen carefully - Communicate, what are your doing right?
  • The importance of a handshake - It's your first contact, what does it say?
  • How to remember names - Tips and tricks to remember names.
  • How to work a room - Build relationships, give before you get.
  • How to keep connected - Phone, fax or visit, what's best?
