President's Message
Deborah Macfie sales@gourmetcuisine.com

Hello, it’s me…your proud President! You may ask why I’m feeling so terrific. Well, our membership has grown tremendously; our programming department has created dynamic monthly events; the "board buddy" system is a huge success; and lastly, your Toronto Chapter is full of exemplary industry professionals who are committed to fulfilling your requests.

The communication between you and our team is stronger then ever. Your comments and feedback are crucial for us to understand your objectives and for us to continually develop programs that suit your needs.

Volunteers are coming out in full force to help with monthly meetings, the newsletter, and of course the Gala. As many of you witnessed firsthand, last year’s Gala was outstanding! Looking ahead, we intend to outshine ourselves by producing another stellar event!

I appreciate your emails and phone calls, and encourage more of you to convey your thoughts. Let us know how we can improve our meetings, and please share what you’ve liked so far.

As we wrap up this membership year, we will continue to deliver the kind of events you have been asking for. As well, the membership committee will be calling on prospective members to offer them 15 months for the price of 12, providing they register by the end of April.

If you know someone that wants to join, please email our Executive Director, Carol Ford, at info@isestoronto.com. There might be a little something in it for you!

Thank you for a great start—and cheers to an outstanding finish and future for us all.

Deborah Macfie

CEIA Spirit of the Industry Award…Karen Eluck; KEP Events

The spirit of the industry award is presented to an individual who has been involved in the meeting and event industry for over ten years and has proven his or her commitment and passion for their craft. The individual we are honoring tonight has demonstrated her devotion to this business through her impeccable business and personal ethics, her integrity and her involvement in industry functions, educational programs, industry associations and publications. She has built a solid reputation as a straight shooter and is one of the most well-liked professionals I know. Since becoming a planner 25 years ago, she has developed a brilliant career, managing diverse events across Canada for an impressive list of high end clients.

This year’s recipient has been a source of true support and friendship to her peers and her industry colleagues and an inspiration to up and coming planners and future industry leaders. She has volunteered hundreds of hours to assist in fund raisers, industry conferences and programs and has been a key player in building the foundation for two of the countries major industry associations. She embodies a true passion for event planning and has inspired many with her elegance, grace and leadership. Although she doesn’t know it, she is one of the women I admire most in this business. She is what the spirit award is all about.

LARRY'S TID BITS

The Cartouche
A cartouche is a kind of nameplate. Ancient Egyptians used cartouches for kings, queens, and other high-ranking people in the kingdom. A cartouche consists of a number of different hieroglyphic symbols enclosed in a loop. You can make your own name or company name by visiting http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/cartouche/cartouche.html

Three Dog Night
It refers to being cold. Often when ranchers or cowboys were out on the range they would have to sleep with their dogs to keep warm. A one dog night was a night when he had to share body heat with one dog, two dog night was two dogs and a three dog night was an extremely cold night where he would have to share body heat with three dogs. “how cold was it on your trip?” “It was a three dog night”.

Pipe Down
Pipe down or 'be quiet' could have started when pipes on ships were blown like whistles to give the sailors signals. When a sailor was to be dismissed below he would have been 'piped down' by an officer.

Blind Leading the Blind
Another common phrase is the "blind leading the blind", by which it is meant that the person in charge of the situation knows no more about it than those whom he is leading. This is Biblical in origin, coming from Jesus: "Let them alone; they are blind leaders of the blind. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall in a pit.".
