ISES TORONTO CHAPTER
NEWSLETTER

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

It is with great pride that I take on the responsibility of ISES President for the Toronto Chapter; thank you for believing in me.

Deborah Macfie sales@gourmetcuisine.com

My goal this year is vast. One goal is to work with all successful programs of the past years. Expand and create a membership program template for future boards to develop and grow into a program that reaches out to our membership answering their questions, creating new benefits for members and understand the idiosyncrasies of our membership.

Another goal (and passion) is to bring and expand on the vision of ISES globally: “To uphold the integrity of the special events professions to the general public through our “Principles of Professional Conduct and Ethics.” Coupled with this goal is to ensure that we are cultivating high standards of business practices.

Is ISES all things to all people? NO- not all the time. Can ISES Toronto become a sounding board in the industry, a learning experience for old and new members; an ethical environment to share with colleagues and competitors alike? YES it can.

I look forward to speaking to you over the next year and beyond and I thank you for your membership again this year- this is a year you will see a difference!

Interesting

"Break a Leg" - Where did it come from? You be the Judge.....
This phrase dates back to the 1920's and is superstition against wishing an actor good luck. Many people think the origin comes from when in 1865 John Wilkes Booth, who was an actor, broke his leg while leaping to kill President Lincoln during a play at the Ford's Theatre. However, this does not really seem like it is related to good luck. Some stage actors think it has to do with bending your knee when you bow, like at the end of a successful play.

Break a leg is cited as superstition against good luck, which is what I originally thought it meant. Recently, I was informed that "leg" refers to the side curtains and it suggests that the applause ought to be so great that the legs fall and break from the stage. I can't say how truthful this necessarily is. The side curtains are, however, called legs, so it's entirely possible.

The origins of "break a leg," began in theatre ballet productions where they came out for curtain calls. The rod that allows for the curtain to be raised and lowered is called the "LEG". So "break a leg" truly means to get so many curtain calls that the leg breaks in two.

'Hydro Pole' Interference
It has been a tradition over the last 6 years for Balloon Corporate Events to add much excitement to the street decor for Pride Toronto. Fabulous, long lasting 60 foot arches spanned Church Street and were attached to the telephone poles... up and out of harm's reach. The permission to use the poles was never an issue and always issued by the City of Toronto.

However, for the first time in many years, Pride Toronto did not have their beautiful arches across Church St. It seems the poles have been sold to Toronto Hydro and permission to attach balloon arches was not granted... Mm mmm!

The $100.00 Bet
Balloon Corporate Events was contracted to decorate the outdoor event Tent at Atlantis, Ontario Place.

While prepping in the decor elements inside, a maintenance man questioned if the balloons were going outside. As we were decorating the outside of the tent, we replied, "yes, of course." With a huff and a puff, he advised us they would never last out there with the near hurricane winds that were blowing that day. With that, we bet him $100.00 that they would!!

Even though the winds picked up so badly that the event was called and moved inside, our displays stayed fast to the tent. To this day, we are still owed the $100.00!
