President's Message

This Year Think Global

As my journey as President for our Chapter begins, I can't help but recall the sequence of events that got me here. My "light bulb" moment of how truly important ISES is as an event professional was during my first EventWorld conference in 2007. Although the conference was in Montreal, I had the opportunity to network with event professionals from around the world - UK, Australia and South Africa. Spending 3 intense days with the Canadian members also helped establish relationships I wouldn't have otherwise had just meeting them through our monthly events. That Eventworld truly put the "International" in ISES for me.

This year at the 2009 EventWorld, my "take away" was a quote from Sally Webb, The Special Event Company, who has offices in USA and UK. During her panel session she explained that her company thinks global and adjusts their work schedule. As 5pm at the office approaches, she believes "if our country is closed, call another one!"

In this day and age, with Facebook, Twitter and multitudes of networking sites, it's getting easier and easier to meet and keep in touch with global contacts.

If you're just getting into the event industry or are new to ISES and thinking, "I'll probably never end up doing events outside of Ontario, so "international" doesn't apply to me," actually it does. If you create relationships with ISES members from other chapters/countries there is an underlying loyalty between ISES members to use other ISES members. When an ISES member from USA has a client needing to do an event in Ontario, they will contact members of our ISES Toronto Chapter to help get the job done.

Creating international ISES relationships can afford you opportunities more so than your competitor. Now more than ever it is important to maintain a membership of ISES to keep relationships strong, so when the time comes for more work to be shared, you will be top of mind.

Our recession is ending and there is still work to be had. With our Olympic Torch Relay route crossing 1000 communities, this is the year Canada's event industry will shine. Now more than ever is the time to think global.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our Immediate Past-President, Lara McCulloch-Carter who helped me make a smooth transition into the role of President. Lara's patience, hard work and leadership skills exemplify what it takes to lead a team of volunteers. I am grateful for her wonderful mentoring.

Our Programming team has worked diligently over the summer months to create a unique calendar for the year (which even includes an over-night excursion for members!) and I am thrilled with the creative and educational components of each meeting. I am excited for our members to see the passion and talent we have on the Board this year.

I look forward to seeing you at our next chapter event.

Cheers,
Rachel Mangal

ISES TORONTO MAKES A MARK ON THE WORLD
By Rachel Mangal, President ISES Toronto

Four members of the Toronto Chapter of the International Special Events Society were featured speakers at the 2009 Eventworld conference held in San Francisco in August. The wealth of experience showcased at their sessions truly reinforced that they are experts in their fields and that Toronto is a leading region of the industry.

Personal & Professional Branding Using Social Networks
Lara McCulloch-Carter, Founder, Ready2spark.com is a local expert in social network strategies and etiquette. Joining a panel of Ryan Hanson, CEO, BeEvents and Marla Watson-Werst, CSEP, PeaPod Productions, the panel presented to a live and virtual audience. It was the first ever presentation for Eventworld to broadcast a session via Twitter. The panel educated delegates on the top 3 social networking sites {Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn} demonstrating the features of each. The audience enjoyed hearing success and failure stories along with important strategies an event industry professional can use to increase their market share. Lara expressed the importance of identifying a purpose before entering into any social networking site. She also shared that there are 2 schools of thought when choosing a social media handle – one is to use your company name, the other is to use your own name. In most cases Lara recommends the latter, as people like to have conversations with other people, not corporations. Creating and maintaining a personal brand with a strategy will help you get the most positive use of social networking. Ryan Hanson mentioned he actually has 4 different Twitter handles just to keep each of his "brandings" separate for each of his targeted audience and followers.

Common Mistakes Made Expanding your business into a New Market
Michael McCulloch, Founder Regal Tent Productions presented as a panelist joining Richard Foulkes, Director, Imagination and Sally Webb, CSEP, The Special Event Company, discussing the challenges of expanding your business into a new market. Taking them from initial idea to actually opening the doors of the new location, delegates learned the most important step along the way - researching the new market to compile a marketing plan and following that plan. For the presentation the panel conducted a survey among successful event industry solution providers. Their research found that they spent about 30% more finances than originally expected and the time it took to get things off the ground was 200% longer than anticipated.

AV 201
Bill Guest, Founder of CCR Solutions answered the question of why AV is always so expensive and some tricks to get around it. The audience was shown new technologies in AV advancements including Watchout Screens, Presidium screens and hologram projections.

Life Balance
Steve Kimble, Design guru, interviewed Ken Kristoffersen, Founder experiential events, on the main stage to discuss how after a tragedy that kept him off work for several months he now finds the balance between working in the industry and still keeping a balance for down time. Ken expressed the importance of achieving a peaceful balance between doing what you love and taking care of your inner self.

The Toronto chapter is thrilled that we made our mark on this year's Eventworld.

ISES TORONTO JUNE PATIO CRAWL A HUGE SUCCESS!

ISES Toronto members were thrilled during our first ever Patio Crawl in June! Starting out on the Roy Thompson patio, we were spoiled by 4 fabulous caterers not to mention the Roy Thompson hall staff. Two Luxury Coach bus loads of attendees then piled in (while listening to the Star Productions promo CD) and headed to the Distillery District for a tour of Tappo and the Fermenting House. Back onto those comfortable buses – and then headed to Seven which had a wonderful view of the entertainment district! Highlights of the evening were the amazing food at each location, unique complimentary drinks and getting a real chance to network with people on the bus!
